What is Botox?
It’s a super-clean protein (Type A, like Allergan or Dysport) from a bug called Clostridium Botulinum. Don’t worry, it’s been a safe, effective treatment for ages!
- How does it work?It chills out tight muscles by blocking the nerve signals that tell them to contract. You’ll usually feel this relaxing effect about two to four weeks after the shot.
- What’s it used for at IBAP Clinics? They use it for tough, chronic pain where muscles are super tight or spastic. Think of it as a muscle-relaxing injection for:
- Constant Migraines
- Uncontrolled muscle spasms (Dystonias)
- Severe muscle stiffness (Intractable Spasticity)
- Certain nerve-related pains (Neuropathic Pains)
How long does the chill last? The muscle relaxation usually sticks around for three to six months. It’s not forever—the effect wears off, and the nerve signals come back. Also, they can’t do these shots forever, so your consultant will manage how often you get them.
Before the Procedure
- You’re an outpatient, meaning you go home the same day.
- You have to sign a consent form.
- 🔑 BIG RULE:You absolutely must have an adult friend or relative drive you home in a car or taxi. You can’t take the bus, train, or drive yourself. If you don’t arrange a ride, your appointment is canceled! Seriously.
- The Procedure:Get changed into a gown. The doctor finds the exact tight muscle, cleans the spot with antiseptic, and then gives you the injection.
- After the Procedure:You’ll hang out in the recovery area for about 30 minutes while the nurses watch you, and then you’re free to head home with your designated driver.
What about side effects?
-
- Sorenessis totally normal around the injection site.
- About 12%of people feel a little flu-like or ‘washed out’ for a week or two.
- A small number (1%) get a temporary ‘pain flare’(increased pain) for about a month. This is rare and doesn’t mean the treatment failed!
- Super rarely, if the shot is near muscles for your throat, you might have temporary trouble swallowing or voice issues.
Who can’t get Botox?
-
- If you are pregnant.
- If you have specific nerve/muscle disorders like Myasthenia Gravisor Eaton Lambert syndrome.
- They’ll also be extra careful if you have severe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME).
